Accessible & bariatric

Accessible travel that's actually a nice day

East Coast Minibus Hire runs wheelchair-accessible and bariatric transport across Wicklow and South Dublin. Everyone in the one bus, off to the same place: Glendalough, a garden centre, a family wedding. The powered lift and secured floor are there when you need them. A carer always travels free.

Accessible travel

What we run, and who travels with us

No two accessible trips look the same, so we start with yours.

We drive hospital runs, nursing-home outings, day-care collections and family days out. Some journeys are one person and a carer. Others are a group travelling together with a chair on board. Tell us what the day looks like and we’ll match the vehicle to it.

Wheelchair-accessible

A powered tail-lift and a proper floor-securement system, for easy, dignified boarding and a safe, clamped ride for manual and powered chairs alike.

  • Ramps on cars, lifts on buses; some have both
  • Floor clamps for the chair
  • A carer travels free
  • Seats for the rest of the family too

Bariatric transport for larger passengers

A dedicated extra-wide vehicle with a higher-capacity lift, for larger passengers a standard accessible van can’t safely carry. It is booked ahead rather than pulled in at short notice.

  • Extra-wide access & seating
  • Higher-capacity powered lift
  • Unhurried boarding, handled with care
  • Pre-booked in advance

Bariatric

What makes the bariatric vehicle different

No other operator in Wicklow advertises a bariatric vehicle.

We run accessible vehicles with ramps and powered lifts, plus one extra-wide bariatric vehicle with a higher-capacity lift. It needs booking ahead.

On the day

How boarding works

  1. The ramp or the lift comes down

Whichever your vehicle carries, it comes down kerbside at your door.

  2. The chair goes on and gets clamped

The floor clamps go on before we move off, not after.

  3. Everyone else boards

The carer and the family take their seats, then we go.

Accessible travel FAQs

What people ask us

Is it a ramp or a lift?

Both. Our wheelchair cars have ramps; our accessible buses have powered lifts; and some vehicles have both. Whatever you need, tell us and we’ll send the right one.

Can a carer or family member travel too?

Always, and there’s no extra charge for a carer to travel. Tell us how many are coming and whether anyone else uses a chair, and we’ll bring the right vehicle.

What’s the difference with the bariatric vehicle?

Beyond standard wheelchair access, we run a dedicated extra-wide bariatric vehicle with a higher-capacity lift, built for larger passengers who a standard accessible van can’t comfortably or safely carry. It has to be booked ahead, so tell us early if you need it.

Does accessible transport cost more?

No. We don’t charge a "disability surcharge". An accessible trip is quoted the same as any other trip of the same distance and group size. The team quotes every job by hand.

How much notice do you need?

The more the better. We run a range of accessible vehicles, plus one extra-wide bariatric vehicle that needs to be pre-booked in advance. Ring us even at short notice and we’ll do everything we can to sort it.

What people say

Reviews from around Wicklow and beyond

“Amazing experience as a wheelchair user. Driver Frank was chatty and very polite. Will definitely be the first call I make in future.”

“The main factor in my 5 star review has to be down to our driver, Helen. I would give her 10 stars if I could. She was on time for the many stops we had arranged and she really took care of us. No woman was left behind with Helen as our driver!”
  • Chris W. Google
“Ciaran collected us and all the luggage at the door and made the whole journey very easy. As promised, he was there to collect us at Dublin Airport after the holiday and knew that our flight had landed early. Very professional.”
  • David M. Google
“The minibus was booked for 5am and was there at 4.45 waiting. For our return the driver rang and texted that he was there, and was helpful with the luggage. Happy to recommend them to anyone.”
